Town officials continue to wait on news about a $15 million grant needed to repair aging sewer lines and the town’s wastewater treatment plant.

Not only will the federal funds help alleviate some issues, but it will play a significant role in eliminating the current state-mandated moratorium that was executed in 2015.

“I think we will learn something one way or the other on that grant around December or January,” said Jammie Royall, town manager. “That money will not solve all our problems, but it will give us a giant step forward.”

The town also seeks $1 million in funding to replace an existing drain line underneath CSX railroad. The 36-inch piping will be increased to 46 inches.

Royall said news on that grant could come in September.

State emergency grants for a sewer line replacement in the south end of town and housing rehabilitation throughout each district have been approved. However, the town has yet to receive the $2.75 million slated to complete those projects.
